Your Salt Lake apartment puts you in ideal proximity to some of the best outdoor recreation in the world. And now that the weather is warming up, it’s time to get out there and enjoy it. Here are three hikes you can get to in minutes, even after work, and start soaking up the warmth, sunshine, and amazing scenery:
One of the easiest, closest, and highest-payoff hikes near your Salt Lake apartment is Donut Falls. The round trip is only 3.5 miles, so you have time to squeeze in a hike in after work. It’s also not terribly steep, which makes it good for children. The trailhead is about 9 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon, off of I-215. The trail ends at the namesake waterfall, which cascades through a circular hole in the rocks and is at its most dramatic in the spring, when heavy snowmelt maximizes the river’s flow. Plan on getting your feet wet if you want pictures from inside the cave.
Also up Big Cottonwood Canyon is the Broads Fork Basin trail. This is a more difficult hike, which gains 2145 feet in just over two miles. (The out-and-back round trip is 4.3 miles.) The trail takes you along a full, rapid creek in the spring to a beaver pond in the high valley that gives you astonishing views of the Broads Fork peaks and the Uintah horizon. Follow the trail a little past the beaver pond to notice where the raspberry bushes are so that you can come back and enjoy them in late August. From your Salt Lake apartment, take I-215 to Big Cottonwood Canyon a little more than 4 miles to a parking lot that’s shared by the Lake Blanche trailhead.
For extra-easy access from your Salt Lake apartment, choose the Bell Canyon hike. The trailhead is right on Wasatch Blvd, at about 10250 South, in a parking lot on the east side of the road. For an easy, after-work hike, follow the dirt road, then signage for the trail, to a beautiful waterfall and reservoir. It will take you 20-30 minutes to get that far, and if that’s all the time you’ve got you’ll go home happy. The trail continues for another three miles, though, getting much steeper, and leads through a boulder field and eventually to another reservoir. As a bonus, there’s fishing at both reservoirs.
Living in a Salt Lake apartment gives you both maintenance-free living and easy access to the spectacular Utah outdoors, so make the most of the warming spring weather and enjoy yourself.
